How far is Polar Stay from the airport?

Polar Stay is 1h15 from Kiruna Airport, 45 min from Pajala Airport, 2h15 from Kittilä Airport and 2h50 from Rovaniemi Airport.

How do we reach Masugnsbyn?

Accepted Answer

Renting a car at the airport is strongly recommended: the house is about an hour away from Kiruna airport and you will want the freedom during your stay. Buses exist through länstrafiken.se, but the timetables are very limited and the nearest stop is 1 km from the house.

Where can we rent a car?

Kiruna, Luleå, Kittilä and Gällivare all have rental desks. Book early in high season, the fleets up here are small.

Question 4

Is driving in Lapland difficult?

Not really. Cars come with studded tyres, the roads are cleared regularly and traffic is light. Drive at 80–100 km/h, keep your distance and watch for reindeer and elk, especially at dusk.

What is included in our stay?

You have the entire house, with access to the sauna whenever you like (firewood included), snowshoes, Wi-Fi, washing machine, bed linen, towels and everything you need for a comfortable stay.

Can we see the northern lights from the house?

Yes. On a clear night and with the right conditions, you can see the northern lights from the garden. They are unpredictable, though, so patience is key. You may need to stay outside and keep looking up!

How do we use the sauna?

Light the wood stove about an hour before you want to use it; it settles between 70 and 80°C. If you are brave enough, step outside and throw yourself into the snow: sensation guaranteed!

Are linen and towels included?

Yes, for every guest, with the beds made on arrival.

Can we bring our dog?

Unfortunately not. We cannot accept dogs in the house.

What clothes should we bring?

Thermal base layers (wool is best), a fleece or wool mid-layer, a windproof and waterproof outer layer, warm winter boots, two pairs of gloves, a hat covering the ears, a neck warmer and wool socks. Bring a water-free, greasy face cream (ordinary moisturisers contain water and freeze on the skin).

Is winter clothing included in the activities?

Yes. Warm overalls, boots, gloves and hats are provided for the snowmobile and reindeer farm activities.

When are the winter activities available?

Our winter activities are available from late November or early December to mid-April, depending on snow conditions.

Do we need to book activities in advance?

Accepted Answer

We highly recommend booking in advance, as some activities can be in high demand during peak season. Last-minute bookings are always possible, but cannot be guaranteed.

Is it dark all winter?

No. The polar night lasts less than a month around December, and even then there are roughly four hours of light between 10 am and 2 pm, with long pastel skies at either end.

Will we see the aurora?

Accepted Answer

With very little light pollution around Polar Stay, you are in a great place to watch the aurora. But nature decides when the show begins. Some displays last only a couple of minutes, while others can dance across the sky for hours.  Stay outside, be patient and keep looking up. An aurora alert app can also help you know when it's worth stepping outside.

Do we need a licence to drive a snowmobile?

Yes, a valid driving licence is required to drive a snowmobile. Passengers in the sled need nothing.
